Muster is a zine wherein music inspires writing which inspires art. It is a print publication, this website being a peripheral production to the zine itself. Muster began in December of 2009 and has continued (slowly but surely) ever since.

The Process:

I send out a detailed prompt that encourages my writers to listen to music. They write a short story (150-200 words) based on their musical inspiration and send it in to me. I then write out all of the stories on my dear typewriter (pictured below).

 

Copies of the original stories are then sent to interested artists. One artist gets one full copy of the zine, and illustrates (more like responds to) the stories. Each copy is done by a different artist.

One artist = one entire issue of the zine = a different version of Muster entirely.

Music –> Writing –> Art

It’s like a weird, artistic game of telephone.

Finally, I make copies of the stories and art, and I add something special to make each zine unique, and then it’s all done. And then, you get it.
